Students take on scourge of alcohol, drug abuse

From The Greenville News - 5/6/2011

By David Griffith (Mauldin Rotary Club Member)
U
pstate South Carolina is anything but immune to the epidemic of alcohol and drug
use by our youth. Underage alcohol consumption is the number one cause of death for teens.

For knowing parents it is a haunting source of worry.

About 15 percent of alcoholic beverages sold are consumed by underage drinkers. Marijuana and many other drugs are about as easy to get as potato chips. Ask any 16-year-old, and he will confirm the trend just reported in a national three-year tracking study published by the web site PartnershipAtDrugfree.Org.

I have been involved with many groups addressing this problem and with the many associated social and educational problems resulting from substance abuse. There are many, many groups and agencies working to address the issue. And they are effective to a degree, especially with
at-risk groups.

Making a Difference

The Mauldin Rotary Club, whose motto is "Service above self." said John Thornton, the group's president. Dictionaries for Third Graders

The Mauldin Rotary Club members distributed dictionaries to area elementary school students on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, following its weekly club meeting.  The over 500 dictionaries included a copy of the Rotary Four Way Test to help students remember:

Of the things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

One student at Mauldin Elementary School asked the meaning of the word "beneficial", which afforded the opportunity for the students to put their newly received gifts to work immediately.

Schools served:

  • Mauldin Elementary
  • Bethel Elementary
  • Greenbriar Elementary

Interact Yard Sale

The Mauldin High Interact Club met early Saturday morning (7am - 10/23/10) for their first ever fundraiser yard sale. The students and their faculty sponsors (Ginger Ernst and Oana Willimon) collected several car-fulls of items and the Mauldin Rotary Club also chipped-in with items. Mauldin Rotary President John Thornton opened the doors to the Cultural Center and he, Oana's husband, Larry Woods and Steve Shaw muscled-out about six tables to display the goods. Interact always had a good three or four students flagging down motorists from Butler Road while another five or six students helped the faculty sponsors keep the displays orderly and make sure no customers walked off with anything by accident.
